Since beginning trapeze in the late spring I have been striving to increase my visual awareness while I am flying. There is a lot to think about in the 15-20 seconds of a flight. I have found every flight gets a little better. The hardest part for me is during the first swing when I anticipate the caller’s instructions to get into “first position” at the apex of the swing. Last week I had some breakthroughs and am looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
What I am learning about awareness in flight has made a significant change in my awareness as I play and move through my day. I find it easier to utilize inclusive awareness, it seems to just be available even in mindless activities. From walking down the street to moving my arms to bring the flute to the lips, the process is becoming clearer without effort. Moving is fun and enjoyable and I recognize that I have choices about how I move. This flexibility has beautifully enhanced my playing as I find myself in the moment more often enjoying the playful banter of the notes and phrases along with the movements that create the music.
