It’s show week! 11-weeks have flown by – no pun intended! It is now time to transform into a super hero. My Mrs. Incredible costume is taking shape. As I have thought about performing and wearing a costume I am reminded about an exercise in my friend, Kay Hooper’s book “Sensory Tune-Ups” (www.allsensepress.com) In this exercise Kay invites the reader to mentally “Suit Up!” and explore the impact of the costume you wear on the performance. She asks you to notice what it feels like to wear a “classical music suit” as you play and contrast that with playing the same music in a “fun suit.” Throughout the exercise, Kay asks you to tune-in to the sensations of your body in the different costumes, noticing how they impact your performance. When I initially completed this exercise, I found my playing was influenced by the costume I chose. The more comfortable the costume, the more comfortable I was, the more expressive my music-making. On Saturday I get to take this exercise one step further, I will actually be wearing my costume. Transforming into Mrs. Incredible will help me perform with super hero power. Hep!
